Dr Monique Camacho is an experienced surgeon with a special interest in refractive cataract surgery, laser vision correction, ocular surface diseases and keratoconus.

Dr Monique Camacho started her academic training in science before she received her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2010. During her medical internship at The Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Johannesburg – the largest hospital in – she was honoured with the prestigious “Doctor of the Year” award by the internal medicine department. Dr Monique Camacho worked as a GP on the West Rand for a few years before undergoing ophthalmology training at the University of the Witwatersrand. In addition, Dr Monique Camacho was awarded cum laude for her master’s thesis describing a rare corneal dystrophy for the first time in a South African family. She has since accumulated a wealth of expertise that she now brings to each patient at her ophthalmology practice in Roodepoort, Johannesburg.

Besides her total commitment to patient care, Dr Monique Camacho is also actively involved in clinical research and empowering the next generation of eye specialists. She is currently an associate fellow with the Refractive Surgery Alliance (RSA) – an organisation comprised of the world’s top refractive surgeons.

Dr Monique Camacho regularly participates in high-volume outreach programmes. Most recently, she’s become increasingly involved in the Tshemba Foundation based near Hoedspruit, Mpumalanga. The medical volunteer programme is committed to improving access to quality healthcare for the rural populations of Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

Dr Monique Camacho’s favourite aspect of her rewarding career is developing close-knit relationships with patients.

Dr Monique Camacho is particularly interested in providing holistic eye care. She strongly believes that your eyes should be viewed in the context of your overall health. She maintains good relationships with experts in other medical and surgical fields to ensure the best outcomes for her patients.
